SpaceMonger is an application that lets you find out which files and folders are taking up the most space on your hard drive. This program comes with an option to install it as a portable product. In this case, you can place SpaceMonger on an USB flash drive and run it on any computer. Plus, your Windows registry keys will not change.
The interface of the program is easy to navigate through but it could use some improvements since it doesn't provide a visual impact.
You can get started by selecting a drive to analyze. Once the scanning is completed, you can view a treemap and statistics.
When it comes to the treemap, you can can check out a visual representation of how space is occupied on your hard drive. The fact that files and folders are color-coded helps a lot.
So, you can use a selection and pan tool, toggle power-select mode, zoom in and out, go back or forward to the previous or next zoom/position, show free and unscanned or hidden space, as well as toggle between a physical, logical, uniform, log and folder map.
In the "Statistics" section, you can view a pie chart that shows space occupied by audio, video, programs, packages, Program Files, Windows, source code, object files, CD/DVD images, free space, and others.
But you can also check out the total size of disk, used, free, unscannable and hidden space, as well as the size of a disk cluster, file system, number of files and folders, average file size, and more.
In addition, you can use a search function, access external tools (e.g. Command Prompt, Desktop), set up SpaceMonger (e.g. treemap layout, style and colors, fonts, visual themes) and optionally restore settings to default, change the interface language, create a favorites list, and more.
The program takes up a moderate amount of system resources and quickly finishes a scanning task. Also, the help file is comprehensive and you can use keyboard shortcuts. It froze several times during our tests, right after we switched to "Statistics" (we had to restart the application).
All in all, SpaceMonger is a very good tool for analyzing the occupied space on your computer. However, it is not very stable (at least not on Windows 7) and the interface could use some improvements. Nevertheless, we recommend it to all users.
